At Help for Heroes, we believe those who serve our country deserve support to live well after service. Every day, men and women leave their careers in the Armed Forces because they are wounded, injured or sick; their lives changed forever. We help them, and their families, to recover and live well after service.

And who are we you’re wondering? We are experts and beginners. Generalists and specialists. Ordinary people with an extraordinary passion towards making a positive change to the lives of our veterans (and having fun while doing it).

As One Team we share a philosophy – I.C.A.R.E. It’s the way we walk and talk, the way we interact with others and how we approach everything we do. We are:

Innovative – Collaborative – Authentic – Resourceful – Energetic.

We have an incredible opportunity for a Communications and Advocacy Officer to join our team on a part-time basis.

Please see below for more information on what just might be your future role.

About the Role

Are you passionate about storytelling and making a real difference in the lives of veterans and their families? As a Communications & Advocacy Officer at Help for Heroes, you’ll play a key role in sharing the incredible impact of our work. You’ll be the vital link between the charity and the Armed Forces community, ensuring their voices are heard and their stories are told in compelling and meaningful ways.

Working as part of the Communications and Public Affairs team, you’ll identify and develop case studies that support charity-wide initiatives, from Public Affairs and PR to Marketing and Fundraising. You’ll also support regional and national PR campaigns, such as Armed Forces Day and Remembrance, and contribute to our Press Office’s day-to-day operations.

If you thrive in a fast-paced environment and have a talent for building trust with individuals to uncover and develop powerful personal stories, this role offers a unique chance to make a lasting impact by bringing the experiences of veterans and their families to the forefront.

About You

You’re a natural storyteller with at least three years of relevant experience and a passion for impactful communications. You have a confident, friendly approach and excellent interpersonal skills, allowing you to build strong relationships with veterans, their families, and stakeholders across the charity.

You can juggle multiple priorities, working at pace while maintaining attention to detail. With excellent written and verbal communication skills, you know how to adapt your tone of voice to suit different audiences. A keen interest in the media landscape and current affairs will help you identify opportunities to amplify our work, while your ability to remain calm under pressure ensures you can respond to the fast-changing news agenda.

Experience working with beneficiaries in the military, healthcare, or charity sector - and knowledge of safeguarding protocols - would be an advantage. More than anything, you bring a positive attitude, flexibility, and a passion for ensuring veterans and their families feel heard, valued, and supported.

About the Team

This role sits within our Communications and Public Affairs team, part of the wider Marketing and Communications team. We’re a passionate and driven campaigning unit, working to amplify the voices of veterans and their families, influence change, and ensure their stories are heard by key decision-makers and the public.

Collaboration is at the heart of what we do. We value different perspectives, share ideas, and celebrate each other’s successes. Whether it’s developing powerful case studies, responding to the news agenda, or delivering high-impact campaigns, we work hard to achieve meaningful results.

If you’re looking for a team that is purpose-driven and committed to making a real difference, you’ll feel right at home with us.

Help for Heroes believes those who serve our country deserve support when they’re wounded. Every day, men and women have to leave their career in the Armed Forces as a result of physical or psychological wounds. The Charity helps them, and their families, to recover and get on with their lives. It has already supported more than 26,500 people and won’t stop until every wounded veteran gets the support they deserve.
